The latest set, Duskmourn: House of Horror, brings fresh gameplay elements to Magic: The Gathering, showcasing an innovative approach to its mechanics. Wizards of the Coast has outlined the features of this chilling release, guided by the malevolent elder demon Valgavoth and its five ambitious overlords. Prepare for a spooky adventure filled with unexpected turns both in story and gameplay.
One exciting addition is the ability to cast impending creatures as enchantments for an alternative cost. This mechanic allows players to suspend these creatures with time counters, making them more affordable to summon on later turns while also activating different effects.
Additionally, the new Room mechanic emerges as a dual enchantment card type. Players will select one portion to cast upon its reveal, with the possibility of ‘unlocking’ and casting the second portion for its specified mana cost later in the game.
Another noteworthy feature is the introduction of a creature type named Glimmers. These unique entities return as enchantments after their initial demise, adding a fascinating layer to the battlefield dynamics.
The return of Manifest brings with it the Manifest Dread mechanic. This allows players to select one of the top two cards from their library to place on the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature, while the other card is sent to the graveyard. If the face-down card turns out to be a creature, it can be revealed at any moment by paying the required mana cost.
Delirium also makes its comeback, paired with a novel mechanic called Survival. This allows a tapped creature at the beginning of a player’s second main phase to activate its ability. The concept is that the creature survives through combat, but various non-standard formats may offer ways to exploit this by tapping creatures outside of combat situations.
Lastly, it’s worth noting the strong focus on enchantments in the mechanics of Duskmourn. This culminates in the Eerie mechanic, which activates whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under a player’s control. For Room cards, one single card can trigger two Eerie effects simultaneously.
