Twitter Plans to Monetize Video Content

Even before taking control of Twitter, Elon Musk made a lot of noise. Now he, as the owner, fires employees and makes changes to the platform. In addition to paid verification of accounts, he plans to introduce paid access to video content.
Developers often choose one of the two most common monetization methods: ad integration and paid content. It seems that Twitter is opting for the second option. The Washington Post found out that platform developers are currently working on the so-called “Paywalled Video” feature. When it is activated, users will be able to add videos to their tweets and set a price for viewing them (from the options offered). It is reported that employees are instructed to introduce a new monetization tool as soon as possible.
The potential introduction of this feature immediately raised many questions from experts. This instrument can be used to distribute pornographic materials (Twitter is one of the few platforms where such content is not prohibited), copyright infringement, and other malicious activities. There may also be difficulties with advertisers and payment solution providers who are always wary of potential adult content. Moreover, it creates risks associated with violation of US law. Recall that earlier, the developers canceled the OnlyFans-like monetization system due to the threats related to child sexual abuse.
At the moment, it is not clear if the development of this feature was planned earlier or if it is Musk’s initiative. In any case, it is clear that the new owner has accelerated internal processes to find income sources unrelated to advertising. Please share your thoughts on this paid video feature. Do you agree that more time should be devoted to its development and risk assessment?
